About Marcus Harrison
After achieving my Masters degree in Chemistry (MChem) and leaving university I moved into the rubber industry where I have been gaining experience since 2014. Initially I worked with Goodyear Dunlop Tyres UK and VIP Polymers Ltd before joining Berwin Polymer Processing Group. These experiences along with my education have allowed me to understand how to apply my chemical knowledge to a practical application and due to having to change industries, it has also allowed me to gain a greater understanding of how to manipulate chemicals/raw materials into achieving desired end results depending on the application. In recent years I have continued my professional development by completing management courses (including project management, effective change management, finance), rubber processing and development courses, chemical health and safety courses and many other activities. I am currently a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC) and have achieved chartered chemist (CChem) status.
Listed skills include Chemistry, Science, Teamwork, Time Management, and 30 others.

Development work may involve: working with external compounders to supply VIP with high end bespoke materials or working with an extensive supplier base in order supply VIP with the best material selection choice and process.Other primary duties involve being the authoritarian on material approval and certification. This involves stewardship and retention of VIP's range of UK, French, German and other international potable and waste water approval certificates. Under instruction of the Technical Director I also expand VIP's portfolio of certificates/approvals. Secondary duties involve leading in the assessment of rubber compounds and components. This primarily involves ensuring VIP's compounds and components meet all relevant standards such as ISO, EN, BS, DIN etc. This may include customer and internal specific standards as well. Analysis of these compounds/components include EN681 testing, MDR rheometer testing and any other relevant testing to pass off production or experimental compounds/components. These testing methods are bench-marked against other businesses and assessed regularly to see whether there are any possible improvements. Show less

Duties included assisting and performing research for Dr Swanson on polymer chemistry and fluorescent labels with her research group in the University of Sheffield Chemistry Department. Research work included performing polymer synthesis reactions and reactions to bind fluorescent labels to the polymers. These systems were then analysed by investigating the ultraviolet absorbance, the steady state excitation and emission, the anisotropy and fluorescent lifetime. This data then had to be manipulated in order to provide certain characteristics of the system such as e.g. the molar absorption coefficient or the concentration for which eximer formation begins to occur. Practical laboratory chemistry skills were also developed as I became familiar with the use of all the machinery required for the above tasks as well as becoming familiar with techniques such as freeze drying and developing my skills in working under dry conditions/under vacuum.
