About Marcus Schultz

Marcus Schultz is a Researcher in the Defence Strategy program at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute (ASPI). Marcus has made significant contributions to ASPI's defence strategy research agenda, having led the delivery of a strategic level discussion-based scenario exercise for ASPI's 2024 Defence Conference 'JoiningForces’ and providing analysis to ASPI's Defence budget briefs 2023-24 and 2024-25.Marcus has had analytical roles in think tanks producing timely evidence-based research and analysis on a range of topics, including Australian defence policy and military strategy, land and maritime capability, and future land warfare in the Indo-Pacific. Most notably, Marcus provided research assistance to and helped edit a 2024 ASPI special report authored by the Deputy Chief of Army entitled, The implications of emerging changes in land warfare for the focused all-domain defence force. Marcus has also contributed to joint submissions by ASPI authors to Joint Standing Committees, such as the Joint Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Inquiry into the Department of Defence annual report 2022-23, addressing artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous weapons related issues. He has also been involved as a participant in national and international scenario exercises and tabletop exercises, testing assumptions about regional strategic policy alignment and escalation dynamics, force structure planning and national preparedness. Marcus holds a Master of International Relations (with Distinction) and Bachelor of Political Science and International Relations both from the University of Western Australia, and has extensive experience in communications, copy editing and digital marketing roles.
