About Marcus Shearn

During my working life I have gained numerous skills on Education and Residential Projects and I am continuously improving my skills. I am a very good team player and will always help my fellow colleagues out whether for advice or helping the school placement students. I have a good working knowledge of JCT Contracts especially Minor Works and Intermediate Forms of Contract.Working in the Construction Industry has a great impact on people and the types of buildings that I have worked on over the last 17 years. I enjoy working with all the numerous professionals and contractors who undertake the works to ensure that the project is completed to the Clients satisfaction. I always learn from the projects I have completed and keep my skills upto date by undertaking CPD both within the office and evenings to develope more as a person. I have a good sense of humour and consider myself to be easy to work with.Throughout my career I have learnt about different types of construction and how I can improve the process for the type of project I am working on.

    Undertaking roof coating replacement using a Liquid Applied Roof Membrane system to various Primary and Secondary Schools within the Borough of Stockport. The total cost for this scheme was £1.9M and was carried out while the schools were occupied. The project involved the full design service from survey with specialist manufacturer to preparation of drawings and tender documentation. Also during the works I acted as Contract Administrator and dealt with the schools on a regular basis to deal with any specific issues during the contract.Undertaking DDA Improvement Works to various locations within the Borough. The works involved undertaking detailed surveys of the residential blocks to determine the extent of the works which included upgrading various doors to meet current standards, external areas to enable improved parking provision and general access into the individual blocks. The improvements were put out on a traditional contract and included all the tender documentation being prepared.

    The duties carried out have built upon the skills I obtained during my placement year with the University. Since commencing employment I have been responsible for managing two large scale student refurbishment contracts, including site management and dealing with Valuations prepared by an external Quantity Surveyor. Other projects have included the conversion of a library into a state of the art computer cluster for the School of Modern Languages. This particular project involved close liaison with our in house Electrical Engineer to ensure full compliance with regulations. I have also undertaken a Schedule of Condition of a residential property prior to its refurbishment and subsequently, became responsible for the refurbishment of the building. My responsibilities encompassed the initial measured survey and dealings with fellow professionals throughout, to ensure that the project was satisfactorily completed. Various problems arose during the project duration proving it to be a difficult undertaking but by exercising my transferable skills:- communication, teamwork, problem solving and Information Technology, I satisfied the client by completing the refurbishment in time and to their exacting standards. Other functions carried out during my work in the design office have necessitated compiling a defects inspection of all buildings prior to writing the specification for the works. The Condition Surveys have been used to detail the works required to update the building in terms of a refurbishment scheme.
