In the foothills of central Washington, above the banks of the Columbia River, I was able to aid in the recovery one of the last vestiges of greater sage-grouse. In addition to radio collaring and translocating grouse, during nesting season our department monitors the spring nest success of every owl, hawk, eagle, falcon, and raven in an area greater than 330 thousand acres.In addition: Conducted ground survey for north American beaver in arid perennial Columbia River tributaries and authored final report; Quantified vegetation regeneration, restoration planting success, presence/absence of rare and sensitive plants, and erosion as part of post-fire disturbance assessments; Located, downloaded, redeployed, and generated graphs for stream temperature loggers used to determine suitable habitat for salmonids

Yellowstone National Park

Cougar Project: Conducted non-invasive sampling of puma throughout Yellowstone National Park's northern range. Daily activities included snow tracking, proper collection of genetic samples (scat and hair), perform necropsies on wolf and cougar kills. Located kills, bed sites, latrines, and scrapes. Worked with houndsmen and hound dogs to tree and fit pumas with research collars. Completed digital data forms in the field using Filemaker Pro on iPad tablets. Installed and maintained remote cameras at puma frequented sites. Follow: instagram.com/yellowstone_cougar_project/Wolf Project: Participated in the annual 30 consecutive day intensive gray wolf Early Winter Study. During the study I was responsible for locating wolves using radio telemetry, visually spotting, or by listening for howling. Data was collected on pack location, pack structure, and behaviors such as prey interactions and inter-pack aggression. Because of our visibility to the public, when appropriate, we educated visitors about wolves and other park wildlife species. When study packs were not visible or inactive, we traveled to and investigated GPS data cluster locations in search of prey remains so that we could perform field necropsies and collect samples.

As the city of Seattle's nearest Forest Service district and federally designated wilderness area, our recreation areas received heavy use. As a member of the Trails and Wilderness program I was responsible for maintaining the trail system and wilderness sites to a high standard as means of keeping the public safe and protecting the resources from being loved to death. Trail construction and maintenance required using motorized and non-motorized saws to keep trails clearly defined. It also required using and maintaining various other tools of new and old technology. Additionally, I initiated uniformed public contact to enhance user experience and educate the public about federal wilderness areas. Some the most enjoyable work came from working with various non-profit project partners who lead volunteers to help with the never ending amount of work to be done on the forest.As an extension of my duties in the Trails and Wilderness program, I was certified to assist in wildland firefighting and have participated in multiple wildlife surveys.

Working with a University of Washington graduate student looking at the effects of recolonizing wolves in Washington state, afforded me the opportunity to be on the ground getting to understand the effects of predators on the landscape. By trapping and radio collaring prey species we were able to monitor their movements and feeding habits with and without wolves present.
