Former nursing student turned social worker. In 2016, after “thru-hiking” all 2,189 miles of the Appalachian Trail, I returned to my hometown of Columbus, Ohio eager to re-enroll in school and pursue a degree in social work. I had spent the previous four and a half years attending nursing school part-time while working as a Patient Support Associate in the Intensive Care Unit in one of Columbus’ renowned hospitals. During that time I realized I was drawn to the psychosocial issues impacting patients and family members. A career in social work would allow me to work “upstream” with the goal of preventing human beings from falling in to the rushing current. I want to be a change agent in a more preventative capacity as well as have the opportunity to enact change on a larger scale. While completing my degree, I provided in-home, around the clock care to my 89-year-old grandmother. While challenging at times, the two and a half years spent not only caring for my grandmother, but also connecting with her, is one of the experiences I am most proud of and will cherish for the rest of my life. Following my graduation in May of 2019, my partner, who I met while hiking the Appalachian Trail, and I decided to resume our mutual sense of adventure and packed up our car and headed West. Along the way we would visit 13 National Parks; hiking, camping, and enjoying each park’s unique characteristics, making lasting memories along the way. Our journey ended in Portland, Oregon, a city we have always wanted to visit, and now where we call home.
