Humanity has cut down over 3 trillion trees (almost 50% of the total), and emitted 1.5 trillion tonnes of greenhouse gasses. Very simply, for there to be a habitable planet for our children and descendants, we need to put the trees back and draw down the greenhouse gasses. The Million Tree Pledge is helping solve these two problems. We are a collaborative initiative bringing together businesses and individuals to make a bold commitment to plant 1 million trees each in the coming years. This is in addition to racing to zero emissions. Led by a group of established and independent small businesses, the Pledge has two parts: 1. A commitment to plant over 1 million trees by a specific date (most pledgers have chosen 2025).2. A commitment to find at least two other pledgers, ensuring that the initiative grows exponentially. Through the Ecologi.com platform, pledgers donate to the Eden Reforestation Project. In 2009 I was elected to represent the 11,000 residents of the Wensum Division in Norwich, on Norfolk County Council. I won with 49.6% of the vote, becoming the first Green Party County Councillor to represent Wensum. During my four-year term I acted group leader and deputy leader – sitting on a range of committees, including Planning, Economic Development and Cultural Services. I also sat on the ‘Transformation working group’ that was tasked to devise ways the Council could generate more income. Achievements during this time included setting up a county-owned renewable energy company, Norfolk Energy Futures Ltd. This has created an additional revenue stream for the Council and is the now largest of its kind in the UK. I stood down in 2013 to focus on Fountain. My seat was still held by the Green Party.
