In this senior leadership role on the Content team, I perform a variety of functions, including shaping and supporting the direction of the roughly 100-person team; being the primary collaborator with cross-functional teams on big projects; serving as a thought partner to vertical GMs; being an instigator for innovation (such as AI); operating as the standard bearer for content quality; acting as a translator of information and communication so as to promote alignment, plus doing everything described in my previous role (see below). And, as essentially the No. 2 to the VP of Content, I provide an invaluable perspective to all critical matters, small or big, in how the team operates. I also host an internal podcast with our CEO, in which we talk about his vision for the company.

Managed and developed the lead editors of multiple verticals that covered the biggest topics in personal finance. Ultimately was responsible for about 50 high-performing editors, writers and spokespeople, who are experts in a variety of topics and based across the country. Responsibilities included hiring (I’ve screened thousands of applicants), development of managers and individual contributors, setting standards in performance evaluations, creating team-wide trainings, providing company-wide presentations and more.

Served in a dual role — as a lead assigning editor and manager on the Core Personal Finance team, I performed content development (including overseeing one of NW’s most trafficked pages), SEO and editing; as a deputy director, I joined the leadership team and helped oversee the entire content team, which included hiring across all verticals, designing professional development trainings and often being the face for Content at company-wide presentations. I also managed the lead editor who oversaw our team of distinguished investigative journalists.

Created editorial processes and standards for data-driven reports, which were key in increasing NerdWallet's authority and brand recognition among consumers and media. Responsibilities included content development, line-editing, advising data analysts, building methodologies and overseeing publication. I also built and developed a team of around a dozen writers and editors. Was selected Manager of the Year for my ability to lead and develop people, collaborate cross functionally, elevate editorial standards and deliver results.

As a member of Bloomberg’s high-powered technology team in San Francisco, I assigned, edited and wrote stories for Bloomberg.com’s global technology coverage. This included editing reporters who covered technology in Asia and Europe, as well as Silicon Valley. I also launched a global technology newsletter.

Directed business and technology coverage for the San Francisco Chronicle; oversaw 8 weekly sections and several blogs; managed 10 staff writers and about a half-dozen freelancers; developed, assigned and edited stories.

As the company's first multimedia editor, I pioneered the newsroom's efforts in podcasts and interactives (remember Google Map mashups?) and led other content innovations. Also led newsroom-wide editorial projects that garnered national recognition and awards. Because of these efforts, was recognized as the Hearst Eagle Award winner, given to the newsroom's top performing journalist.As technology editor, I directed coverage of personal tech, enterprise, biotech and nanotech. Managed staff of six reporters. Line-edited stories, oversaw presentation, occasionally wrote articles.I also served as the newsroom's multimedia trainer and was a frequent speaker on new media (American Society of Newspaper Editors convention, UC Berkeley Radio Magic Day, San Francisco State University, Podcast and New Media Expo, JEA National High School Journalism Convention).
