Research AssistantElephant Seal Research Group Sep 2011 - Dec 2011Falkland Islands (Malvinas)Long term study (since 1995) of the breeding population of southern elephant seals at Sea Lion Island. Males come to the island to establish harems enabling them to have breeding right with those females. All individuals are tagged using jumbo tags to establish the life history of the individuals returning to the island every year. A few individuals were tagged using satellite tags to monitor the route taken by those individuals after the breeding season. All newborns were tagged and weighted to establish energy transfer between females and pups. Behaviour of all individuals was monitored throughout the season.
