Maria works with her husband Mike Carter, who is the Founder/Main Brain of the business. Maria helps in the educational department via teaching young kids simple electronics, Expanding Your Horizon program, and any special events where Surplus Gizmos can help folks explore the many ideas that one can do in the world of electronics. Maria also has a daytime job which is Physical Design Specialist for a known company here in the Hillsboro area, she also accompany her husband when there are special events like Trade Show events such as SeaPac Ham Radio event in June every year, Las Vegas merchant show, etc.

This is a yearly project that I work with Centralia College Electronics Department in partnership with the Expanding Your Horizons/AAUW teams along with other presenters for various programs. I teach 2 sessions during this event to show Middle School Teens (girls in particular) a little taste of what its like to build and learn simple electronic application. I have and is working towards more of a MAKER type setting. The challenge is that we only have 50 minutes each class and within this time frame I am able to create simple kits that they can build/see how it works, teach them hands on experience via soldering parts, and also to have a little fun - creating fun projects that they can take along with them.Strive to encourage students to look into the Technical field and all the options they can do. A little bit of imagination/innovation to create/build their ideas.
