Maria is Argentine and specialized in transparency and democratic institutions, two subjects in which Latin America faces interesting challenges. In 2008, after 10 years of work in the area, she created the Directorio Legislativo Foundation and since 2017 is its Global Executive Director, based in Washington, DC. She is also the author of the 10 editions of the book "Directorio Legislativo. Who are our legislators and how do they represent us in the Congress of Argentina", covering from 1999 through 2019. She is also the founder of the Latin American Network for Legislative Transparency, composed of 24 civil society organizations from 13 countries in the region. Her tireless work for the promotion and defence of transparency in the governments of Latin America earned her the 2013 NDI Democracy Award for Civic Innovation. In addition, María is the 2020-21 co chair of the Steering Committee of the Open Government Partnership (OGP) together with the government of Korea, is Secretary of the Board of Directors of CEDA Washington, member of the Civil Society Advisory Committee of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), and part of the Board of Directors of the Argentine Network for International Cooperation (RACI). She is a Fulbright-American Political Science Association (APSA) Fellow and a Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED). She studied journalism, has a Masters degree in International Relations at the Universita degli Studi di Bologna, Italy, and is a Ph.D. candidate in Political Science from the National University of General San Martín, Argentina. She loves outdoor life, plays women's soccer, and lives with her husband Francisco and their three children, Violeta, Matilde and Ramón.
