About Mariah E.

I study non-invasive brain stimulation for the treatment of addiction as a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology + Neuroscience at IU-Bloomington. Previously, I served as a clinical research coordinator at the Duke University Traumatic Stress and Health Research Lab under the guidance of Drs. Jean Beckham, Pat Calhoun, and others. As an honors laureate, I graduated from UNC - Chapel Hill in May 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy and minors in neuroscience and in medicine, literature, and culture. In my free time, I foster dogs through a local pit bull rescue and enjoy creating art with friends.

    I served as a study coordinator on "Heroes Health Initiative: Supporting Healthcare Workers during the COVID-19 Pandemic" UNC IRB Study #: 20-0823 under Dr. Samuel McLean, MD, MPH.Heroes Health is a smartphone app-based mental health support initiative for healthcare workers and first responders during the COVID-19 pandemic. By completing brief weekly surveys, app users are able to check in with themselves, keep track of their mental health, and connect immediately to helpful resources (crisis lines, meditation apps, special discounts, etc.). At partnering organizations, institutional leaders receive de-identified, aggregate reports of employee well-being and reports on things like PPE and departmental communication. My work has focused especially on developing and implementing our communications and outreach plans, setting up and aiding organizational mental health support teams, beta app testing and web development, and preparing resources for potential partners and donors.

    As an undergraduate research assistant for the Better Tomorrow Network within UNC’s Institute for Trauma Recovery, I worked directly under Nicole A Short, PhD on a range of projects related to sexual assault (SA) trauma. I primarily focused on the development and creation of a feasibility study called the RISE Guide, an mHealth intervention designed to make cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for anxiety sensitivity accessible to women following SA in the interest of preventing the development of posttraumatic stress longer term. • Used Qualtrics to build, edit, pilot, and check complex survey designs (e.g., intervention materials, ecological momentary assessment and intervention, cognitive bias modification) and prepare these for data analysis• Identified potential grants and funding opportunities and assist in applications• Proofread scholarly publications and managed references using EndNote software• Collaborated with other research assistants to create a unified brand and aesthetic and design graphics for the intervention and study materials using Adobe Illustrator and Microsoft Powerpoint.• Compiled a comprehensive and accessible list of local resources available to participants at each of our test sites• Completed and maintained weekly rounds updates
