About Maria Szwarc
Biomedical research scientist with extensive training in molecular biology with a primary focus on transcriptional regulation in cancer (endometrial, breast, and salivary gland cancer) and reproductive biology. Experienced in the implementation of preclinical mouse and patient-derived cell models in the discovery of novel clinically applicable molecular targets and trained in large-scale omics- data analysis. Extensive (30+) publication record in peer-reviewed journals on topics spanning hormonal regulation, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, and transcriptional regulation. Practiced in undergraduate and graduate mentoring, undergraduate teaching, presentation of scientific data, manuscript preparation, grant writing, and cross-disciplinary collaboration. Passionate about applying bench-side discoveries to improve patient outcomes and eager to pursue new ventures.

Maria Szwarc work experience
A career timeline built from the work history available for this profile.
Scientist I
Postdoctoral Research Fellow
As part of my training, I applied molecular methods, CRISPR technology, and large-scale data analysis to elucidate mechanisms regulating p53 transcriptional network activity and to improve the therapeutic efficacy of p53-targeted drugs. I also trained in large-scale data analysis using R and supported data analysis of projects delineating p53 function during differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs). Additionally, I gained experience in independent preparation of non-federal and federal grant applications.
Postdoctoral Researcher
During my first postdoctoral training, I led projects studying transcriptional regulators involved in normal and abnormal human endometrial cell biology and collaborated with fellows and clinician scientists on pre-clinical mouse model projects investigating breast and salivary gland cancer, early pregnancy, and thymus biology. I also led -omics data analysis efforts in the study of transcription and signaling factors critical for female fertility.
Graduate Student/Research Ass.
My thesis project focused identifying the role of the transcriptional coregulator Steroid Receptor Coactivator-2 in endometrial cancer metabolism. During this time, I also collaborated with senior scientists in the department on projects using preclinical mouse models to study transcription factors and coregulators in early embryo implantation, breast development and carcinogenesis, and uterine abnormalities in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). I was also part of a team obtaining biopsy samples for the establishment of human endometrial cell cultures to discover and investigate cellular factors critical for embryo implantation.During this time, I started my journey in learning large-scale data analysis through the design and setup of integrative databases of -omics and gene ontology datasets in FileMaker Pro. I also served as a Student Representative to the departmental Graduate Educational Committee (duties included supporting student recruitment efforts).
Project Intern
I received two scholarships from the Count Jakub Potocki Foundation, Warsaw, Poland which allowed me, as a visiting international scholar, to acquire training in state-of-the-art microscopy (including training in high-throughput microscopy and image analysis) in Dr. Michael M. Mancini’s laboratory. I assisted on projects applying microscopy-based assays to study androgen receptor (AR) mutants and personalized medicine-based AR agonists and contributed to the development of fluorescence imaging-based assays to study transcriptional activity at the single cell level. I also maintained brightfield/fluorescent, deconvolution, and high-throughput microscopes and performed imaging and data analysis for Integrated Microscopy Core clients.
