About Marie Banks

Turning more than 20 years of experience in visitor centre management, interpretation planning and exhibition design/delivery around the world into a freelance job to help others achieve excellence in visitor experience with every graphic panel, multimedia exhibit, exhibition gallery, bird hide and boardwalk. My passion is helping people make connections to heritage - particularly our natural heritage of wildlife and natural history - but I'll find a story in anything and interpret it appropriately for the audience. Recent projects have had quite a focus on making STE(A)M subjects more accessible, merging engineering, built heritage and social history with the arts.An eye for attention to detail is equally important in interpretation design as it is for proofreading and editing. I'll review anything from a tweet to a thesis and can copy write and edit with your audience in mind. And, as a member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading, you have peace of mind about the quality!

  • Wwt (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust)
    Principal Consultant
Wwt (Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust) Jun 2007 - Dec 2015
    Slimbridge, Gloucestershire, Uk
Working for the consultancy wing of the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust (WWT) was a dream. Surrounded by world-class, dedicated conservationists, with 75 years' experience of managing habitats and visitor centres to maximise visitor experience whilst minimising impact on wildlife, my job involved global travel to advise on design and management of visitor attractions. My senior post in the team led to delivering projects in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, the USA and South America.
  • We The Curious
    Exhibition Manager
We The Curious Mar 2000 - May 2007
    Bristol, Uk
In a previous life, We The Curious was the At-Bristol Science Centre and I was the Exhibition Manager for Wildwalk-At-Bristol, a biodiversity exhibition taking visitors on a journey through all life on Earth. Sadly, it only existed from 2000-2007 - a casualty of the 'Millennium funding' - but, as an innovative visitor attraction blending multimedia exhibits with live animals and plants and with the backing of the BBC Natural History Unit to supply unique wildlife footage to provide context for the live exhibits, it was ahead of its time and provided 100,000s of great learning experiences. Not just for the visitors, but for me too! During my time there I gained a wealth of experience in zoo animal keeping, botanical house management, visitor experience studies and evaluation techniques, formal and informal learning, fundraising, interpretive planning, exhibition design and delivery, project management, exhibit maintenance, staff and contractor management ... the list goes on.
