About Marie Duggan

* I have been blessed with 6 beautiful children. My third son was diagnosed with classic autism and MR in 1991 at the age of 18 months. Told he was "unteachable and unreachable" he would never speak and I would be better off to get on with my life and institutionalize him. I refused to accept that.*As the technology started evolving at a rapid pace I formed Technology For Autism Now, Inc. An IRS approved 501c3 in Dec of 2009. TAN's suite of mobile autism apps for iOS and Android platform will be life changing for individuals with autism. If you are interested in pilot testing our app in your school district or vocational setting, doing Usability Testing within your University/College or want to help TAN in any way please contact me! These children don't have time to wait, the new statistics are 1 in 68 children as of March 2014 (CDC) Center for Disease Control "Improving the lives of children with autism and their families through innovative technology solutions."

Canopy is a "social impact accelerator" based in Somerville's Davis Square. A social impact accelerator is a unique kind of organization that is different from a typical, technology startup-focused accelerator. Accelerators provide services, such as office space for startup teams, mentoring services, introductions and other forms of support designed to accelerate the success of a startup. In the case of Canopy's mission is to empower social impact-focused technology and life sciences-focused startups alongside local nonprofits that are focused on solving similar challenges. This is all in an effort to create an inclusive and dynamic climate of collaboration, inspiration and shared purpose. The name Canopy is a metaphor, alluding to a forest canopy: Home to a multitude of diverse species, who find shelter and a sense of community under the cover of that foliage. At Canopy, they believe that any individual who takes a leap to launch a vision at great personal and financial risk is also a startup, and we are here to provide support and a welcoming atmosphere to those who dare to be so bold. So, for example, in light of crushing rents that are decimating parts of the nonprofit community, their model allows them to offer space to a nonprofit for $37.50/month. Canopy has set out to redefine the meanings of the words “innovation” and “startup." We aim to expand the boundaries of the "innovation ecosystem" to include a greater diversity of ideas, people and perspectives.

  • Technology For Autism Now, Inc
    Executive Director/Founder
Technology For Autism Now, Inc Dec 2009 - Present
    Greater Boston Area
Founded by Marie Duggan – a mother of a child severely affected with autism, and now internationally recognized advocate for all children on the autism spectrum – Technology for Autism Now is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization seeks to increase the availability, quality and use of assistive technology communications solutions for the autism community.TAN is on a mission to help children with autism have a voice and to understand the world they live in so that they can be active participants at home, school and in their communities with the goal to educate and learn the skills they need to lead more functional lives through childhood and into their adult lives. As Marie Duggan noted after recounting the struggles of advocating for her own child, “The most profound words ever spoken to me by a professional were, ‘Your son has the goods, but we need to provide him with the tools.’ If we keep that in mind. I know we can move mountains for these kids.”To that end, TAN aims to address the many unmet service needs that children face today with a goal of helping challenged children lead more functional lives in their homes, schools and communities. Equally important, TAN’s mission includes providing critical support & tools for parents, teachers and caregivers who are often poorly equipped to deal with the sometimes debilitating demands that come with raising a child with autism.TAN Digital Toolset: Providing Practical Point-of-Need AppsTAN plans to develop applications and software solutions for various mobile and in-home devices, such as iPods, iPads and personal computers, as well as a robust web portal (“online digital toolkit”) to share best practices and practical, easy-to-use tools for families, teachers, professionals and caregivers dealing with children and autism.

    Children'S Hospital Boston Sep 2004 - Nov 2009
I formed a group of parents all of which had varying degrees of children/young adults with autism. We met monthly at the hospital. It was very highly received. I shared my experiences with my child and resources I knew of that many didn't as their children were younger, they shared stories, some happy some sad but it was a safe place for parents to feel like they could speak without being judged. Some were quiet and just listened but soon we became a nice safe circle of friends. We talked about everything! We had sandwiches and desserts, went way past our mtg times and were asked to leave at one mtg so they could lock the doors! Autism is my passion and my experiences with my son, the good the bad and the very bad seemed to be okay. I wanted other parents to know that there were other kiddos out there doing the same types of things. My son had emerging speech at the age of 12! I could offer HOPE! We also talked a lot about communication, behaviors and you name it... as well as assistive technology with our non verbal kids and the many ways we could address that from low tech all the way up to high tech. Through TAN we will be supporting parents who need each other and those who often deal with the debilitating demands of raising a child on the spectrum. I was very saddened the group stopped. It was hope, a little respite, a laugh, a cry, a bite to eat and go home with some new info, It was great for networking. I felt really good that in some small way I helped a mom or dad one nite a month.
