WhiteCharlotte's Web was one of my favourite books as a kid, but it was only when I was much older and doing a lot of writing myself that I stumbled upon the above quote by the author. Those words struck me instantly and deeply, articulating something I had felt driving my writing for a long time. For like Elwyn, I too love the world—the pigs and spiders and geese and rats, the cold brooks and the morning dew, and also all the people who will stand up and help anyone who needs helping. I still count Charlotte's Web among my favourites, and Mr. White among the writers whose skill and passion I aspire to match. While both my creative and professional writing began broadly—touching on many topics and themes—in recent years I have been spending more time writing about nature and, even more specifically, animals. I recently completed the Humane Education Practitioners Certificate from the University of Denver's Institute for Human-Animal Connection, and am using what I learned there both to dabble in the development of educational programming and to solidify my own thoughts on what it means to be a humane writer; someone writing for the benefit of animals, the environment, and people alike. A dedicated lifelong learner, I am now exploring opportunities for a more academic approach to expanding my understanding of and connection with animals, while I continue to develop new skills in journalism and non-fiction writing.
