https://energy.mcmaster.ca/Use waste heat from a gas generator (i.e. CHP) to heat up the micro-thermal distribution network. CHPs have low efficiencies, typically only converting 30% to 40% of the fuel they consume into electricity. This research proposes moving the gas generators into communities where the heat they generate is used in a local thermal distribution network. The waste heat produced represents a large untapped thermal resource in Ontario. The CHP heat will be used to supply energy to the thermal distribution network, which acts as the source for the building heat pumps (HPs).In addition, the ICE-Harvest system is compared to other building energy systems. These include conventional system of individual heating and cooling equipment at each building, a District Heating (DH) system where a centralized CHP delivers heat according to a Follow Thermal Load (FTL) control strategy, and a Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) system with individual geothermal borehole fields at each building. The systems are compared according to their energy consumption, emissions produced, and impact on the electrical grid.

2-Year Fellowship, OCE, NSERCSystem-Level Modeling of Domestic Hot Water (DHW) Distribution Systems in Condominiums: Energy Savings, Resident Comfort and Safety.Energy costs as well as resident comfort and safety require improved insight into multi-resident condominium domestic hot water (DHW) distribution system. This work presents an OpenModelica system-level model validated against field measurements of a DHW distribution system in a high-rise condominium. The present work determines the thermostatic mixing valve (TMV) time delay meeting resident DHW requirements during peak demand. The validated OpenModelica model shows promise in design and retrofitting of DHW distribution networks. Keywords: domestic hot water (DHW) distribution, thermal mixing valve (TMV), resident comfort, energy savings, OpenModelica, resident safety. http://turbulence.mie.utoronto.ca/Publications:Energy and thermal comfort performance evaluation of thermostatic and electronic mixing valves used to provide domestic hot water of buildingshttps://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0378778819332426

Multifunction system for measuring endothelial cell remodeling under laminar and turbulentpulsatile flow related to heart disease A London-based company, Novel Cardiovascular Systems Inc, has developed a unique multifunction system for measuring endothelial (arterial wall) cell remodelling under different types of laminar, turbulent and intermittent pulsatile flows that are associated with the onset and development of heart disease, notably atherosclerosis (narrowing of the artery). In order to accelerate the product to market, NCSI must validate the system with respect to cell biology and blood flow mechanics.
