About Mario Arredondo Marquez

I began my undergraduate career as a psychology student because I was always fascinated by the complexity of the human brain, but decided to switch into biopsychology due to my shifted interest in the underlying biology. However this major didn't offer the in depth molecular aspects of biology that I had hoped to learn about. This is when I decided to complement my biopsychology major by adding pharmacology as a second major, mainly due to its advanced laboratory techniques that undergraduates are required to learn and perform. I saw this as an opportunity to challenge myself while gaining the most of both majors. The Pharmacology laboratory courses were the most demanding, but beneficial and helpful courses I took as an undergraduate since that is where I learned all of my laboratory skillsets such as researching efficiently, writing professional scientific reports, and performing advanced lab techniques. The demanding nature of the course has shaped me, and helped me grow as a scientist and prepared me to work in challenging positions. There were many times I felt like I wasn’t able to meet a deadline, but I was always persistent with myself and was able to accomplish and learn many great things. For example I am now comfortably able to perform and analyze results from techniques such as ELISA, PCR, Western Blotting, Flow Cytometry, Immunohistochemistry, and others.It began as me wanting to apply pharmacological techniques to neurological research, but now that I have learned much more about pharmacology, I am equally deeply interested in pursuing a career in either of these fields. Both these fields are complex and require not only a methodical approach in research but also a very creative and fresh perspective. Practicing science as a creative process really drives me to strive for more, and as long as there are complex problems to be solved I will never stop pursuing these lines of research.
