Presented to FirstRand a review of corporate art collecting practice in South Africa.Made a critical assessment of the existing FirstRand art collection. Prepared an art strategy for the FirstRand Group.

Invited to give some 25 walkabout lectures for the general public and for private functions hosted by the sponsors of The French Season 2012. The exhibition ‘20th Century Masters: The Human Figure’ formed part of a French and South African cultural exchange programme and included some 60 works by 40 of the great masters of the 20th century, including artists such as Manet, Matisse, Renoir, Picasso, Braque, Léger, Bonnard, Masson, Bacon and Orlan.

I was invited to conceptualise and curate an exhibition entitled ‘Water, the [Delicate] Thread of Life’, which opened in 28 July 2011 at the Standard Bank Gallery. A group exhibition featuring 30 of South Africa’s foremost contemporary artists and the work of ‘traditional’ southern African artists, the exhibition opened to favourable reviews in the local and national press. ‘Water, the [Delicate] Thread of Life’ included a number of site-specific installations created especially for the exhibition by leading South African artists such as Karel Nel, Willem Boshoff, Marcus Neustetter and Walter Oltmann. Other participating artists included William Kentridge, Penny Siopis, Mmakgabo Helen Sebidi, Norman Catherine, Jackson Hlungwani, Maria Mabaso, Moshekwa Langa, David Goldblatt, Georgia Papageorge, Durant Sihlali, Thomas Mulcaire, Simon Max Bannister and Alan Crump. The exhibition sought to navigate a course through the many wonders and complexities of the precious substance, water, in all its manifestations: physically, spiritually, metaphorically, politically, scientifically and as a medium for divination. The exhibition also included an interpretation of the role of water within past and present black southern African thought and practice. The exhibition was accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue (edited by Prof Federico Freschi) for which I wrote the introductory essay and the texts explicating the works. The catalogue also features academic essays by Nessa Leibhammer, Cyril Coetzee and Caroline Crump.
