As the City of Austin Community Engagement Consultant Marion’s responsibilities include managing a variety of outreach and engagement projects, developing multicultural strategies and plans, and assisting City’s Departments reach disfranchised communities.Marion began her career as an Austin broadcast personality for KELG radio station hosting a community relations program entitled “La Papa Caliente,” which addressed and analyzed issues affecting the Hispanic Community here in the Austin area. In the fall of 1989, she established Estilo Communications and developed numerous advertising and public relations campaigns throughout Texas for a variety of clients targeting multicultural communities. Looking for a more meaningful way to give back to the community, in 2012, Marion decided to close her business and join the Austin Fire Department as their Community Outreach Coordinator. During her tenure at Fire, she led a team and successfully obtained a $250,000 grant from FEMA to provide services to populations at risk. Additionally, she assisted with the most successful recruiting process for AFD by increasing applications from targeted communities to over 50%.Marion has received numerous awards for her community and professional work, including Business Women of the Year by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Certificate of Appreciation by the General Council of Mexico, and Estrella Level to the Reforma National Conference. She continues to volunteers in a variety of organizations serving minorities including La Noche de Opera, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Preservation Austin.Marion has an Associate in Applied Science in Data Processing from Austin Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in English/Communication from Huston-Tillotson University and a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership and Ethics from St. Edward’s University. Altogether, she has over 29 years of communications experience targeting multicultural populations.
