Mapped Francois LeVaillant’s late 18th century travels through the interior of South Africa using ArcGIS Online and ESRI StoryMaps.• Collected location names from both volumes of LeVaillant’s travels and used Google Maps to find, sometimes approximate, modern locations. Used narrative context clues, Google Maps’ distance measuring tool, and authors’ footnotes, to approximate certain locations.• Stored the more than one hundred locations as latitude and longitude coordinates in a .csv file along with LeVaillant’s associated observations on society, natural landscape, and animal and plant species.• Used QGIS vector creation, ArcGIS Online pop-ups with embedded images, and stratified symbology to bring my map to life.• Created a mobile version of the map using ArcGIS WebApps and Explorer.• Used StoryMaps to present my methodology, instruct how to use the map, and discuss potential use cases, ranging from tourism to climate research.Research funded through Professor Grant Parker of Stanford’s Classics Department. Advised by Professor Parker and Professor Emeritus at the University of Cape Town, Ian Glenn.
