Phil Boyte is the original creator of Link Crew and I met Phil my 4th year of teaching. Phil transformed my understanding of what student empowerment and student engagement could be. Link Crew is a program where 12th graders mentor 9th graders so that they stay engaged with school. I brought the program to Harbor High, then to Aptos High. I recruited and trained teachers all around the US and Canada to do Link Crew in their schools. I trained over 350 adults to be Link Coordinators. I presented the Orientation Assembly to over 50 high schools, the largest audience being over 900 high school freshmen. (And it rocked!!!) The following three years, managed the Bilingual Advisory Committee, evaluated more than 30 teachers and oversaw several pro-active student engagement programs including Link Crew and the Student Government. Used the medium of dances, proms, Homecoming and other traditional high school activities to teach project management, leadership, effective communication, time management and conflict resolution. At one point, at one time, over 150 students were enrolled in the various programs. What we were able to accomplish was amazing. Over the three year period, student suspensions dropped by over 70%, 9th grade failures were dramatically reduced and the overall feel of campus improved. -

It was during my tenure at Harbor High that I came to understand how incredible it is to provide the opportunity and to give the skills necessary to young people to make a difference in their immediate community.
