I am a Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics major at the University of Pennsylvania pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (anticipated graduation date May 2025). I have always been interested in product safety and innovation and have conducted a number of research experiments to this end including redesigning bicycle handlebar grips to avoid spearing during a crash and creating a more child-resistant but elderly friendly pill container. My redesigned bicycle handlebar grip was able to significantly reduce impact depth by about 60% compared to a standard bicycle handlebar grip (p < 0.0001). This project was a state and regional winner at the Google Science Fair. The redesigned pill container was found to be child resistant by current safety standards with none of the test subjects under the age of five being able to open it. The design currently has a provisional patent (Application Number 62/986,741.) and the findings of the research are published (Teitelbaum MP, (Winter Issue, 2020) Creation of a Novel Child Resistant, Elder Friendly Pill Container. New Jersey Pediatrics). Overall, these projects involved iterative designing and modeling as well as testing to ensure the significant safety changes were effective while maintaining the core function of the product. At the University of Pennsylvania, I am on the Penn Electric Racing Team as a mechanical member. I am currently working in a group of new members to create an improved seat to use for a future version of the car. Additionally, I am interested in becoming a part of the accumulator subteam where I can learn more about the intersection between the mechanical and electrical elements of the car. As part of the team, and through my coursework I have become proficient in using CAD modeling softwares (namely SolidWorks) and am also taking a machining class (where we are taught to use tools such as mills and lathes) and a MatLab class. As I look forward, I want to continue to work towards making products that have the ability to improve someone's life and make the world a better and safer place.
