An enthusiast for science with extensive experience in protein and cell science and their application to discovery of both small molecule and biological drugs. Most recently I discovered the enjoyment and satisfaction of applying these skills to set up and then grow a business together with a team of fantastically talented individuals.I started my research career purifying and studying central dopamine D2 receptors on a BBSRC CASE award in Philip Strange's lab at Nottingham University.I moved from there to Ten Feizi's lab at the MRC in Harrow where I purified, cloned the genes for and analysed structure function relationships of a group of mammalian beta-galactoside binding proteins.Since that time I have been working in the pharmaceutical industry managing teams and projects providing protein and cell science input and reagents into drug discovery projects for both small and large molecule pharmaceuticals. In addition I have significant experience managing and delivering technology improvement projects. I have a vast experience of recombinant protein expression and purification in all systems and of almost any class or size, intracellular or secreted. I left AstraZeneca in August 2014 and set up Peak Proteins at the BioHub, Alderley Park. We have grown from a business of just 2 people to one employing 50 people. We have moved to a new purpose built facility in Macclesfield in February 2022 and in April 2022 joined forces with Sygnature Discovery. Our expertise is in protein engineering, expression and purification and determination of protein structures using X-ray crystallography, protein NMR and cryoEM. I am an enthusiast for science. I like uncertainty and a challenge, trying to understand a problem and to think, read and by experiments find a way through. I like to be close to the data, either my own or working closely with others.
