Our family’s decision to temporarily relocate to the colonial city of Cuenca, Ecuador (Jan - Jul 2019), high in the Andes mountains was threefold: 1) to step away from the busyness of our DC lives which we felt we were not always living aligned with our values so we could slow down, reboot and have more quality family time, 2) to give our daughter the chance to spend more in-depth time abroad and learn another language and 3) to immerse ourselves in a new country and culture that none of us were familiar with to broaden our perspectives on living well.

Psychological Health Center Of Excellence (Phcoe). Formerly Dcoe And Dhcc.

This period was marked by multiple Center-wide structural and leadership changes associated with governmental realignments as part of unprecedented efforts by the military to support wounded, ill and injured Service members and their families. The original position started in the newly formed Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE). DCoE was created in 2008 in response to recommendations generated by eight different blue ribbon panels and commissions established in 2007. DCoE was comprised of five Centers of Excellence, including the Deployment Health Clinical Center (DHCC). The Psychological Health component of DCoE was later merged with DHCC and then DHCC was re-named the Psychological Health Center of Excellence (PHCoE). The most recent position was Associate Director, Psychological Health Promotion, PHCoE. Former positions included Associate Director, Population Health, DHCC; and Director, Resilience and Prevention, DCoE. These positions oversaw multiple enterprise-level services and activities facilitating strategic partnerships, collaboration, and advancement of efforts to support optimal psychological health readiness, prevent mental health disorders, reduce stigma and other barriers to care, and support help seeking. Examples of services include: (1) making primary contributions to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS) Total Force Fitness (TFF) model, (2) leading multiple Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs joint projects, (3) ensuring unique support for Service members and family members through the inTransition program and Real Warriors Campaign, (4) providing leadership and expertise for three critical DoD psychological health promotion missions (suicide prevention, resilience, and Combat and Operational Stress Control), and (5) advancing science and practice with different professional communities through a range of education and training activities and publications.

Oversaw six staff members and six residents per year working in 10 clinical settings.
