I established ‘Berry Actuarial Planning Pty Ltd’ on 8 July 2002 (AFSL 237 993 and Tax Agent Registration No. 3292 0002) for the purpose of providing financial planning with an actuarial flavour, to encourage clients to be engaged with the management of their own financial plans, and so achieve unique as opposed to institutional solutions to satisfy their financial objectives. The business now employs 5 actuaries, 1 accountant and 2 actuarial analysts plus administration support staff. Berry Actuarial Planning provides advice on, and deals in a range of, financial products. Central to this work is the application of actuarial and financial planning skills to build financial models for clients incorporating a variety of investment, tax, social security and overall financial scenarios. We are different to many other financial advisers in that we apply actuarial skills to map out assets and cash flows to appropriate financial strategies, and then recommend suitable ownership structures and investment opportunities, whilst ensuring adequate insurance protection is in place. Berry can facilitate the implementation of the solutions to help achieve the outcomes portrayed in the models.

Lifemap was a financial planning business established by Zurich Australia. I was then employed 3 days per week. In this role I was accountable for the financial planning advice provided by the Lifemap’s 15 staff and the day-to-day running of the business. In July 2002 Zurich asked me to close the business, following which I exited Zurich to work full time in my own business.

My role as product development actuary involved the actuarial pricing of Zurich’s retail life products (both risk and investment) and unit trusts. As part of this actuarial pricing process, my role included:• researching competitor’s products;• developing a pricing comparator to assist in determining the competitiveness of prices; • modelling the pricing through actuarial projection techniques to assess profitability; • balancing competitiveness with profitability to assist in finalising pricing after dialogue with all stakeholders;• preparation of specifications for administration and illustration systems; • monitoring experience (eg. business volumes, expenses and claims) against that assumed in the pricing; and• for a period of 18 months supervising Zurich’s underwriting and claims processes. This actuarial work involved the calculation and monitoring of the financial parameters within which the company should operate in order to sustain an existence in the market.

In my capacity as a proper authority holder of Zurich Investment Management, I was regularly involved in the detailed presentation of the features of Zurich’s financial products to financial advisers at various meetings and conferences. I also supervised the advice provided by Zurich salaried advisers in Zurich’s Client Advisory Services business unit for the first 12 months of its operation.
