Profile bio

About Mark Brown

I worked in policing for 8 years in total and developed many skills and enjoyed the experiences and challenges that line of work created. Neighbourhood policing presented me with many opportunities to introduce new initiatives aimed at reducing local crime and allowed for forward or lateral thinking and problem solving. I also developed an insatiable appetite for data analysis and this helped in identifying trends and patterns that aided the development of crime reduction. I also have experience of dealing with young people who are on the cusp of criminality, working within a multi-agency preventative environment. Domestic violence and abuse has also featured heavily and I was involved in the MARAC process in various areas in the south-west but mainly London. Before my career break into academia I did a lot of work centred on victim precipitation and strategies to reduce further prevalence. I also dealt with intelligence in many formats and have experience in developing and collating this information. I am Restorative Justice trained and have facilitated conferences whereby victims and offenders have been able to come to mutual understanding within a controlled mediation environment. After undertaking a Masters Degree in Criminology at Kingston University, I developed a more theoretical approach to the subject which has complimented the aforementioned experiences and skills I have been able to develop during my police career. I am currently undertaking a PhD/doctorate and have 3 years experience in teaching at university level in criminology subjects. Outside of work and education I enjoy sport and travel but plan to do more in order to broaden my horizons and continue ticking countries off the list. I have a creative side and when time allows I like to paint and draw, something I enjoyed when I was younger and have re-discovered.

Listed skills include Neighbourhood Policing, Victims Of Crime, Criminal Justice Policy, International Perspectives On Crime, and 9 others.
