My role within Tesco Bank is to work as a Senior Systems Engineer, in the Platform Services Team, with a primary focus currently on planning the migration of the backend Netapp Storage estate (and other legacy storage arrays) to new Data Centers, and to assist in the migration of the backup environment from the older legacy Networker clients, to the new Veeam Backup environment. This includes working closely with the architecture team, and deciding how to progress the Storage migrations and other remedial work.As part of this migration, we are also looking to utilise the new Netapp Cloud suite of features, such as Netapp Cloud Manager/Inights, Cloud Tiering, Cloud Backups, and migrating traditional storage workloads to the Netapp Cloud and AWS with the FSxN product.I am a subject matter expert in NetApp and other storage technologies, such as IBM, HDS & EMC, Brocade Fabrics. I also have a good knowledge of Windows Operating Systems, VMware ESXi, some Oracle VM virtualisation and Netbackup & Veeam backup software and more.In my previous employment I also looked at upskilling into AWS/Azure with some limited work on IAC using Terraform and Github on AWS to build and modify new or existing systems, so also have some experience in those areas too.

My role within Thales is to work as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, in the Private Cloud Team (formerly Infrastructure/Server Team), with a primary focus currently on maintaining and planning the refresh of the entire backend Netapp Storage estate, and VMware ESXi/vCenter and Cisco UCS Servers, but later to work on VMware VRA, vRealize and WFA scripting solutions, as well as an NDMP Tape backup replacement.I have been extensively planning and executing the Netapp Storage Estate refresh, which includes the entire Netapp estate and software, eg OCUM, ActiveIQ, VSC. assisting with head swaps, ONTAP and FW upgrades to DS224C/DS460C/DS2246/DS4246/DS4486 shelves, racking, mirroring/vol moves etc.This has included working closely with architecture, and taking the lead in deciding how to progress the Storage migrations and other remedial work, and getting hands on at the Datacentres racking and stacking, so proper end to end working!.As well as the above, I have also been working on a steady stream of incidents, changes and service requests under tight SLAs and ITIL processes.I am a subject matter expert in NetApp and other storage technologies, such as IBM, HDS & EMC, Brocade Fabrics. At DB Systel UK I worked as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer on the Infrastructure Team, primarily managing an on premise Colo hosted infrastructure for DB Systel UK's internal business and external customer base. Duties included providing 3rd line technical support and progressing project work, whilst also assisting other internal BAU Teams with the multi-protocol Netapp storage environment and VMware and Oracle VM estate.Current managed software stack included Netapp Clustered DataOnTap, SnapMirror/Vault, SnapCenter, SnapDrive, ActiveIQ OCUM, Windows OS 2008-2019, Veeam, VMware, Oracle VM, Citrix.There was also a growing AWS and Azure Cloud estate. During 2020 I looked to upskill into AWS/Azure so that I could also be involved in supporting that side of the business, and did some limited work on IAAC using Terraform and Github on AWS.

There was involvement in constant transition projects, and responsibility for implementation of new storage and backups into steady-state BAU support. While working at Proact UK (formerly B2net) at that time they were the largest NetApp Storage Reseller in the UK (as well as NetApp’s preferred for partner for 4 years). They were also the winner of the “Storage Reseller of the Year” for 3 years in a row. I worked on the the Proact Service Desk from its inception, and was promoted to a Technical Team Leader. Throughout my time there, I also provided remote support and consultation to Proact UK's 1200 strong ASP customer base assisting as well as providing consultative advice where necessary. Additionally I provided hands on management (including limited account management) of Proact UK's rapidly growing Managed Cloud Service (MCS) division of 30 customers at that time.Daily duties primarily included troubleshooting customer issues with the whole range of NetApp software and the interdependent software that bound them all – MS iSCSI initiator, SnapDrive, SnapManager (SME,SMSQL, SMVI SMOSS etc), Operations Manager (DFM), Protection Manager, Provisioning Manager, ONTAP 7G & Cluster Mode, SnapMirror, SnapVault (inc OSSV) to name but a few. I also provided hardware diagnosis of any hardware faults on the NetApp hardware ranges from FAS270, FAS20xx, FAS3xxx, FAS6xxx, FAS32xx & FAS62xx, escalating to NetApp, or internal departments (as per ITIL) as necessary. There was also some overlap into the Windows OS, or integration into products such as Exchange, SQL and AD.

Due to a promotion from the WinTel team, while working on the BT/HP EDIN alliance project, I moved on to support the BT Netapp Storage estate. I worked on the Incident rota and change implementation team, and as such provided remote monitoring and technical support to the 3PB BT Netapp SAN/NAS estate, consisting of 80 various models of Netapp filers, running varying levels of ONTAP and provisioning new storage and making changes to existing storage as required, adhering to strict change controls and ITIL processes.The supported estate consisted of a multi-protocol storage environment with NetApp storage presented to a range of host operating systems using NFS, CIFS, iSCSI and Fibre Channel protocols, though primarily Solaris boxes, via NFS.

As part of the BT/HP EDIN alliance project I was supporting BT’s WinTel Server estate and I provided Incident Management and Remote Technical Support in an enterprise environment to over 4500 WinTel servers. Supported OS’s included Windows NT 4.0, 2000, 2003 (all varieties) as well as VMware ESX Server 2.5.

Working for RM Plc I worked on a 10 strong support team supporting a £34M European funded Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) project for the South Yorkshire region. Being part of such a small team, my responsibilities ranged from 1st - 3rd line support but my role primarily revolved around 1st/2nd line support.My duties included working closely with schools, colleges, small businesses (SMEs) and the general public, supporting a wide user base ranging from students, adult learners, teachers, Network Administrators & general IT support staff providing 1st - 3rd line support, including some site visits. I provided support for Windows 2000/2003 server, Active Directory, wireless and wired networking, and all MS clients as well as RM's bespoke platforms (CC3 & RM VP) coupled with standard Intel x86 based hardware.
