About Mark Corcoran

From Afghanistan to Antarctica, Mark Corcoran’s assignments as an international reporter and producer took him to every continent during 23 years with ABC-TV Australia’s news-documentary program Foreign Correspondent. From 2001, he spent a decade reporting on the upheavals triggered by the 9/11 attacks and Washington's declared 'Global War on Terror', from Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Middle East, Europe, and the US.Mark was Executive Producer for two years, and Foreign Correspondent's presenter 2008-11. His ABC reports were widely re-broadcast on many international networks including the BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera.Earlier in his career, Mark specialised in international affairs and defence issues with SBS-TV’s Dateline and Tonight programs and then ABC-TV’s Four Corners and Lateline.Awards for reporting/producing include two Australian Walkley awards for International Journalism, a 1999 Walkley High Commendation for reporting from inside the Taliban state, the Australian TV Logie Award for Most Outstanding Public Affairs Report, UTS-George Munster Award for Independent Journalism, four Gold Medals from the New York International TV Festival for assignments in Iran on the dissident movement, Sierra Leone’s civil war, the Afghanistan conflict, and Egypt’s ‘Arab Spring’ revolution, the Reuters-Mohammed Amin Award for international reporting and the United Nations Association Environmental Reporting Award.After sustaining a permanent voice injury on assignment in 2011, Mark shifted focus to off-camera roles. He led ABC research projects assessing new technologies for international news: the ABC’s Drone/Remotely Piloted Aircraft research program (2012-15) in collaboration with Oxford University’s Reuters Institute and the University of Technology, Sydney (as Visiting Fellow - Journalism 2012-13).In 2018, he was awarded an ABC scholarship to Oxford University’s Reuters Institute, as a Journalism Fellow, researching investigative journalism applications of the new generation of small imagery satellites.Mark holds an MA(Research) from UTS.Mark Corcoran returned to Foreign Correspondent in 2015, working with ABC international correspondents in a producer/mentor role.
