About Mark Dekker

Together with colleagues at PBL and UU, I explore scenarios on climate and energy in the coming century and aim to quantify solutions towards reaching the Paris Agreement goals. Being a natural scientist by training, I love diving into complex issues and thinking of ways of analyzing them, be it with modelling, data analysis or even machine learning. For updates on my scientific work, see https://www.uu.nl/medewerkers/MMDekker.

My research focuses on long-term mitigation pathways, embedded in the IMAGE modelling team at PBL, in close collaboration with Utrecht University. I work under the banner of the H2020 project called European Climate and Energy Modeling Forum (ECEMF). Examples of my research topics are the uncertainty in model projections, equity/fairness in carbon budget allocations, and advanced statistical techniques in analyzing large scenario ensembles.Recent work:• Disentangling uncertainty in… Show more My research focuses on long-term mitigation pathways, embedded in the IMAGE modelling team at PBL, in close collaboration with Utrecht University. My dissertation delves into the study of spreading phenomena in complex systems. While purely theoretical at first glance, I applied complexity theory to address a diverse range of real-world issues: epidemic spreading of COVID-19, social dynamics, railway disruptions, neurological states and climate tipping points. The studies in my dissertation involved collaborations with many stakeholders and internships at railway companies (NS, ProRail) and Statistics Netherlands (CBS).The… Show more My dissertation delves into the study of spreading phenomena in complex systems.
