My work is motivated by the belief that the economic drivers of commodity markets are changing, as society begins to realise that natural capital must be properly valued. The consequence of not doing so will be catastrophic environmental damage. Skarn Associates is at the forefront of quantifying the mining industry's environmental impacts, turning this analysis into forward-looking economic and strategic insight for our clients.Skarn Associates is a business quantifying and forecasting mining sector energy use, GHG emissions, decarbonisation economics and water impacts. Based on our detailed asset level analysis of over 2,500 mines, smelters and refineries globally, we deliver deep insight into the interplay between mineral economics and environmental impacts. As a high growth, young business, Skarn is commercially driven, taking our product development cues from market demand signals. In due course, we expect that this will steer us toward developing more research covering land-use, biodiverity and ecosystem impacts.Aside from Skarn, my personal passions include the rewilding of my smallholding in Herefordshire. So far I have planted several hundred trees, including native woodland, hedgerows and a mixed orchard. The most recent project was a wetland area, which is now a thriving habitat. Watching biodiversity increase is hugely rewarding.I was director of consulting business for SNL Metals & Mining from 2013 up to the acquisition of SNL by S&P Global in 2015. This included a key role in the acquisition and integration of IntierraRMG. In 2009 I co-founded GFMS Mine Economics, a UK-based consultancy specialising in the economics of mine production, relating to precious metals and other mined commodities. GFMS was acquired by Thomson Reuters in August 2011. Previously to that I was a mining analyst and director at Brook Hunt (now Wood Mackenzie) until 2005.Specialities: mineral economics, ESG metrics.
