I am a Professor of Finance in the School for Business and Society, and an Associate Dean (Partnerships, Engagement & International) for the Faculty of Social Sciences, at the University of York, England. Previously I was the Dean of the University of York Management School from 2016-2022, which became incorporated into the School for Business and Society in 2022. I also currently serve as the Deputy Chair of the Financial Conduct Authority's independent statutory panel on Cost Benefit Analysis.Before joining York in 2016, I was Professor of Finance and Academic Leader for "Secure and Resilient Societies" at Loughborough University. I have also held full-time academic appointments at the Universities of Bradford, Exeter, and Warwick and visiting academic positions at the Kellogg Graduate School of Management (Northwestern University), the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Technology, Sydney. Before becoming an academic, I worked as an equity research analyst specialising in the brewing and distilling industries for stockbrokers Savory Milln and James Capel in London. I have also worked for United Distillers in Scotland.My research concentrates on very long-term problems in financial economics. This work is mainly focused on intergenerational cost benefit analysis. This has particular relevance for the appraisal of policies, regulations and projects related to climate change mitigation, ecosystems preservation, and infrastructure investment.My work has been published in interdisciplinary science (Science, Nature Climate Change, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, etc) and economics (American Economic Review, the Economic Journal, etc) journals as well as those in accounting & finance. I have advised a number of international policy makers (HM Treasury, the Financial Conduct Authority, ONS, OECD, International Seabed Authority, etc) particularly on the appropriate choice of intergenerational social discount rates.
