Associate Professor Of History
Associate Professor of History at the US Army Command and General Staff College where I teach mid-career Army officers at the graduate level. I teach three graduate level courses in military history. The first examines the phenomena of military revolutions from the 1630s to the present, the second course looks at how militaries change by examining the interwar period from 1918 to 1945, and the third course looks at the current operational environment facing our students as the return to the military organizations across the globe. I also offer an elective on the Peninsula War, 1808 to 1814, and have taught elective classes on the Evolution of Military Thought and the American Civil War for International Students. I evaluate student writing, direct research, and mentor students pursuing a masters degree in military arts and science (MMAS).
Adjunct Faculty
Adjunct faculty member for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Kansas. I conduct classes entitled "The French Revolution:“Vive la République! and Madame Guillotine", "Napoleon Bonaparte: the First French Empire and the Limits of Glory," "The Duke of Wellington and Emergence of the British Century," and "The Battle of the Bulge: Germany's Last Blitzkrieg" to groups as large as fifty students of various ages. I also lead historical tours of Fort Leavenworth and the Command and General Staff College as part of the Osher special programs.
Alumni
The Institute on Napoleon and the French Revolution is a unique institution of graduate education. As part of the History Department in the College of Arts and Sciences at Florida State University, it is the only graduate program in the United States devoted solely to the historical study of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic era. The Institute is concerned with all aspects of this period. Its M.A. and Ph.D. students have conducted archival research in almost every country in Europe, as well as in much of North and South America. Graduate theses and dissertations have covered a broad range of subjects on various aspects of the cultural, social, political, gender, religious, diplomatic, and military history of the age. Since 1963 it has granted more than 100 graduate degrees (over 50 M.A.s and nearly 50 Ph.D.s) making it the country's most productive graduate program in the field of Revolutionary and Napoleonic studies.
Lieutenant Colonel
US Army armor officer serving in various positions of increasing complexity over a twenty year career. Service included two tours in Germany, combat experience as a tank company commander during Desert Storm (1991) and tours in Kentucky, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, and Kansas.
Assistant Professor, Department Of History
Instructor and assistant professor of history in the Military History Division, US Military Academy at West Point. I was a teacher and mentor for undergraduate students attending a rigorous and demanding four year program, leading to their graduation and commissioning as lieutenants in the US Army. As part of the curriculum, I lead staff rides to various battlefields, integrating classroom study and study on the actual terrain to foster leadership development within the cadets through the use of history. I was also the coach and mentor to the women's Team Handball team, where they participated in international competitions, trained at the US Winter Olympic training center at Lake Placid, and twice competed in the college Team Handball championships.
