Nearly 30-40% of all food produced is wasted, and if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally. Environmental Defense Fund partnered with Walmart to reduce food waste at the farm and distribution center level. My job was to aid Walmart’s global produce sourcing office by identifying the causes, quantities, and solutions to farm level food loss (a $20 billion market) and presented findings to Walmart and EDF executives on how to address this at scale.In addition, I collaborated with the Walmart Sustainability team to evaluate industry-wide best sustainability packaging practices and determined how Walmart could implement these in its growing e-commerce business.

My primary roles, aside from being a mosquito magnet, included collaborating with local leaders, Costa Rican government officials, international donors, nonprofit organizations, and entrepreneurs on community and environmental initiatives. The biggest impact projects included being a business coach for local entrepreneurs, procuring a grant to build the community's first public library, acquiring grants for renewable energy projects, and facilitating business development relationships with international volunteer agencies which now send students annually resulting in a recurring revenue stream for the community. Personally, I learned to appreciate the importance of community and witnessed time and again the amazing progress a group of people can make when working together for a common goal.
