About Mark Herrera
Professional with twenty years of experience in education - ten as a history teacher, two as an instructional coach, and eight as an administrator - who is focused on helping people achieve their goals as Assistant Director of College Guidance at YULA High School and as a Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Palos Verdes (#0224357).Prior to joining the teams at YULA and KW, I served as Vice Principal at New West Charter, an award-winning 6-12 institution in West Los Angeles, where I oversaw all aspects of the high school program for eight years. Under my watch, the program expanded from 375 students to nearly 600, 100% of our seniors regularly graduated and enrolled in college, and 60 to 70% of each cohort went straight to four-year universities. Before becoming an administrator, I taught history classes at the middle and high school levels, where I learned to win over the hardest audience of all – a room full of teenagers – with engaging simulations and debates. Administrators who saw my success asked me to coach other teachers and then pursue a path into school leadership. As a result, my resume includes a list of projects I have completed and responsibilities I have held that translate to multiple career fields. Strong reading, writing, and data-analysis skills were essential to coordinating four WASC accreditation reports. Clear and consistent communication with stakeholders was key to establishing trust and guiding the school community through the pandemic. Managing multiple people and moving parts was critical to coordinating special events like Back-to-School Night, Parent-Teacher Conferences, Winter Formal, Prom, and the Commencement Ceremony each year. Most importantly, a talent for building relationships was needed to guide students and their families through big and complicated decisions, like how to get financial aid and choose a college to attend after walking the graduation stage. My new position at YULA High School is a welcome opportunity to focus those skills on helping students graduate and gain admission to colleges that are the “best fit” for themselves and their career goals. Likewise, joining the real estate team at Keller Williams is a fun way for me to stay connected with and continue to serve the many friends and former students I have had the pleasure of working with over the last twenty years.
