I have over almost 40 years of experience in assessing and managing the environmental, health and social risks, impacts and opportunities associated with projects and policy based interventions. My experience includes equity investments (including OTC), fungible/non-fungible debt, bonds, guarantees, insurance and leasing products. I have worked on development projects in the full range of economic sectors and in scores of countries for both the public and private sectors. These projects range from lending/investing in micro, small and medium enterprises to mega-projects in the extractives, transport and energy sectors. Latterly, there had been a focus on extractives, renewables and on financial institutions (small investment funds to large well-known multinationals). I’ve led large teams in revising MFI ES policies, standards and procedures as well as for private sector banks and funds. I’ve also played leadership roles on large complex projects in all sectors involving issues such as the protection of endangered species and critical habitat, labor and rights-based issues, cultural heritage, resettlement, livelihood restoration, management of construction impacts, GBV and inclusion/discrimination issues. I have held leadership positions within international financial institutions and in consultancy and have also contributed to building competencies in environmental, health, safety and social management in a variety of companies, financial institutions and government agencies. This has involved the development of bespoke ESMSs, policies, procedures and toolkits as well as face-to-face training and coaching of staff at all levels.I am a Founding Partner of King-Sustainability, a multidisciplinary consulting practice specializing in sustainable finance, environmental and social assessment, management and monitoring, the financial sector and C suite policy and strategic advice. Recent clients include ES consultancies, MFIs such as EIB, IADB, AfDB, EDFIs such as BII, governments, law firms and clients in the real economy.
