I work at the US Army Research Laboratory, exploring the intersection between biology and materials. Specifically, I am searching for new biological adhesives to low surface-energy polymers, and developing methods for screening them in high throughput.My graduate studies focused on two major projects. In the first project, I displayed self-associating proteins on the surface of E. coli in order to promote inducible aggregation of the cells. I then helped develop design rules for regulating the size, morphology, and function of the aggregates. We believe the ability to make controlled bacterial aggregates will some day prove useful for environmental remediation, and bioreactor design. In the second project, I developed a protein-based hydrogel system for the culture of pancreatic cells. This defined medium we believe may eventually be a useful substitute for Matrigel. We further believe this culture method allows for the isolation of a rare population of pancreatic progenitor cells, which may be useful in studying how the Islets of Langerhans form. Outside of the lab, I wrote a play, "Faustus, PhD", and have served as a director and producer of plays as part of Caltech theater. I have also worked as an adjunct faculty member at the community college level, and am a soccer referee on weekends.
