I've enjoyed challenges and the development of PE & GRP drainage products and solutions that will and have enhance the long term stability of the Track Support Area and the surrounding boundaries. My goal has been over the last 14 years to improve the drainage asset on the UK Railways and underground networks by trying to educate the Clients, designers and contractors of the correct installation technics required for the pipe selected on the design for a given project to enable it to, withstand the external loadings for both the finished installed cover depth and the interim construction cover depths allowing it to provide a workable long term solution that meets the minimum serviceable life of 60 years. A requirement of NR/L3/CIV/005 and improving the "whole life cost" of the network.Plastic pipe is a product that is not fully understood by most people outside of the plastics industry with a complexity of wall sections for the same internal diameters, grades, modulus and profiles, most can hold a load but how much load is dependant on how and where it's installed as much as the pipes type and its' make-up. Some pipes will require more support from the surrounding ground and bedding than others. Common type of pipes are, Twin wall PE pipe grades (SN4, 6 & 8) through to solid walled PE (SDR33, 26, 17.6 & 11). All of these pipes are currently being used for drainage and service ducts, but sadly they are still being designed by Internal Diameters only with no reference to the wall section required or SDR ratings leaving it open to range of pipes with different installation requirements dependant on cover depths, then there are installed into areas of the track under high dynamic loadings, with limited time available to install correctly to ensure the pipes short and long term parameters are controlled with out which limits the serviceable life of the drain / duct installed. making it a "short term solution to a long term problem!"
