I am currently Associate Professor of Engineering at Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College, focusing on sustainable bioenergy. I am also active in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses at the Thayer School, including chemical engineering fundamentals, energy conversion, chemical process design, chemical kinetics and reactors,and energy systems.RESEARCH:1) Biomass energy:•Developing sustainable, cost-effective advanced-technology designs for cellulosic biomass conversion to fuels, electricity, and chemicals.•Evaluating strategies for building second-generation capability into current first-generation ethanol production.•Determining minimum scale at which advanced-technology cellulosic fuels can be profitable.•Designing and assessing integrated food and energy production systems. •Evaluating impact of dietary changes in the U.S. population on agricultural land requirements.2) Integrated food and energy systems (IFES):•Evaluating thermodynamic efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and environmental impact of integrating energy coproduction in dairy farms in Vermont and New York.•Evaluating IFES involving microalgae production using fish waste, focusing on maximizing digestibility and feeding value of microalgae fed to tilapia•Assessing the impact of sociopolitical dynamics on enabling adoption of IFES.•Determining environmental, economic, and sociopolitical dynamics at various scales.
