My natural aptitude is problem solving. When presented with something which is difficult, or even considered to be impossible, I am motivated towards providing a solution. Working with stakeholders to fully understand the problem and the required end state is why, after many years, I still enjoy and gain satisfaction from being an engineer.From an early age I was inquisitive as to how things worked, how they could be taken apart and if I could put them back together again – ideally in a working condition? Choosing to be a Mechanical Engineer when the majority of my class mates were moving into computers and electronics was viewed as a risk and certainly didn’t follow a family tradition. Experience gained from working on site and not always having the perfect tool, or the right spare parts encouraged me to innovate, to be flexible and to keep an open mind. Being able to utilise the hands on skills I learnt as an apprentice and the theoretical knowledge from University has provided me with the opportunity to work on demanding applications, finding resolutions across many market sectors around the world.Developing new skills, sharing knowledge and managing a team of similarly motivated application, design and project engineers helps maintain my focus and enthusiasm. Outside of work my skills are tested to a different level – a happy family man, gardening, home improvements and enjoying the outdoors; on foot, on two wheels or on water are my relaxation activities. Living in a late 18th century home in need of improvement (understatement), provides plenty of problem solving opportunities (relaxation!).
