I started out in green fields mineral exploration logging drill core, then moved to environmental consulting as a geochemist that focuses on metal leaching and acid rock drainage prediction, principally for environment impact assessments. After secondments at a couple of operating mines I moved into the Health, Safety & Environment team at an operating mine. At Diavik I am responsible for overseeing all environmental programs defined by regulatory and corporate requirements. Activities focus primarily on mine site and local water quality as it relates to the operation and progressive closure of an open pit and underground mine. Manage and conduct environmental monitoring programs (water, sediment, waste rock, tailings, snow, air/dust, aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, vegetation), maintain environmental database, prepare monthly and annual regulatory reports and environmental management plans, and participate in regulatory inspections. Participate in and facilitate internal and external audits. Advise site employees on environmental issues and conduct compliance and incident investigations. Manage safety and provide technical mentoring and oversight to the Environment team as well as visiting consultants and contractors. Provide technical assistance to Superintendent, Environment.
