The Manager of Software Development North America plans, coordinates, and supervises all activities related to the design, development, and implementation of organizational information systems and software applications. Also responsible for creating and enhancing the Client Portal, where customers can access various functionality via secure web site. Also maintains some peripheral applications written in VB, VB.NET, and C#. The group consists of four programmers, one contract programmer, and self.• Changed culture and procedures within the group by implementing a triage system, replacing the Help Desk application, fostering communication, and encouraging peer assists. These efforts resulted in more efficient job management, better coding practices, improved testing, and more confident rollouts. • Changed the overall perception towards the Software Group by implementing design communications up front, more robust rollouts, and feedback mechanisms throughout the development life cycle. By improving our communication and bringing the end-users into the life cycle, we provided a means for a vested interest in the development process.• Improved intra-group awareness by implementing weekly group meetings with an agenda focused on sharing each other’s assignments, providing opportunity for peer assistance, fostering a team mentality, and sharing “learning” moments.• Brought Client Portal programming in-house, whereas prior this was outsourced. Expanded team to include full-time web developer to create web-based access for clients to various LIMS data and functionality.• Created training program for new programmers, such that development practices, coding styles, and development tools are uniform throughout the group. Developed shadowing scheduling, mentor program, and technology quizzes as structured elements of the training program.

Goals for project include: retention of Progress as relational database; retention of 15 years of business logic to remain as Progress 4GL; tight integration with current modules; rapid application development; creation of Data-tier exclusively through Progress Application Server; and browser-based UI.
