Acted as the Professional Head of Operational Safety for Northern Rail, I was responsible for a team of seven specialists in non technical skills, human factors, incident investigation, interpretation of national rules/standards and competence management for all safety critical employees (including managers) within Northern.The designated competent person for all operational incidents including SPADs, Derailments and Collisions, working with internal and external partners to understand the underlying causes behind incidents and seek to implement actions to prevent them from happening again. I worked closely with Network Rail, ORR, RSSB and members of the TOC community to share and seek best practice in Operational Safety.I developed, implemented and reviewed traincrew and operational safety standards and procedures for eventual implementation throughout Northern. I led the Northern Operational Risk Strategy, 2015 Autumn strategy and supporting annual SPAD reduction plan, working closely with the Service Delivery team of Customer Service, Operations, Performance and Engineering teams to bring in the 319 and loco hauled fleet, modified units and new stations whilst ensuring the focus was kept on a healthy, safe and performing railway.
