About Mark Sommer

Throughout my professional life I've pursued personal interests with a passionate social commitment, even when it has meant sacrificing income in favor of nonmaterial rewards. I never joined an organization or corporation, only fleetingly worked for anyone else, and for the first 25 years of my adulthood lived in remote locations up to an hour from my own mailbox. My wife and I built and maintained an independent organic homestead in the coastal mountains of Northern California for 20+ years, raising most of our food and generating our power from early solar panels and a waterwheel, while I made a modest living researching, speaking and writing about global security and sustainability. In the early eighties, I cofounded the Exploratory Project on the Conditions of Peace (ExPro), a group of academics and independent researchers seeking to define a new approach to global security based on the concept of a "peace system" to replace the prevailing war system. In the mid-nineties I launched the Mainstream Media Project, which together with the syndicated radio program, "A World of Possibilities," became my primary professional work for the remainder of my working life. This unorthodox path has sometimes been financially challenging but has never failed to provide more than ample returns in other ways. Pursuing an independent life and livelihood has never been an easy path, but given the increasing insecurity of the conventional job market, it may well be a rewarding way of life for some in an increasingly uncertain future.

Mark Sommer Work Experience Details
  • Solarise
    Founder And Director
    Solarise Jan 2017 - Present
    San Francisco Bay Area
SolArise is a networking and media initiative that seeks to catalyze the rapid deployment of community solar as a key element in California's pioneering mission to power its economy and society on 100% renewable energy in all sectors within 20-25 years. SolArise advocates for innovative locally implemented strategies combining new technologies that enable microgrids to efficiently store and share energy between neighbors without the involvement of public utilities and extensive transmission lines, with financial instruments like solar savings bonds that enable residents and others to invest in and own their own sources of energy production. This strategy is designed to strengthen three core elements of social capital under grave threat in our current political climate -- democracy, community, and resilience. By creating the capacity for standby self-reliance in the event of climate-related storms or cyberattacks, it reinforces resilience. By creating interaction between neighbors building and maintaining a shared resource, it regrows community. And by returning the ownership, control and benefits of our energy production to our own locales, we revive hands-on democracy in place of unaccountable, hollowed-out institutions that no longer represent us. • Hearts Broken Open
    Founder, Director
Hearts Broken Open Apr 2012 - Present
    San Francisco Bay Area
In this post-retirement venture, I am responsible for all roles, from building and updating a website, www.heartsbrokenopen.com, to filming, editing, producing and marketing short films (5 to 30 minutes) profiling individuals, groups, communities and natural environments that demonstrate a capacity not just to survive but to thrive in the face of adversities and misfortunes. Taking on all roles -- a true one-man band -- requires learning to do many tasks that were not within my skill set during my professional life. But it reduces costs to a minimum, enables vast creative freedom, and gives me the luxury of taking my time and answering only to myself. It's a wonderfully liberating experience.
  • Ips Inter Press Service
    Syndicated Columnist
Ips Inter Press Service Mar 1992 - Dec 2014
    Global
For 22 years served as chief American correspondent for Inter Press Service, a global syndication service. Columns were translated into several languages and distributed to newspapers and magazines in more than a hundred countries.
  • The Mainstream Media Project
    Founder, Executive Director
The Mainstream Media Project Jan 1995 - Apr 2014
    Arcata, California
I founded and for many years directed The Mainstream Media Project, an initiative to bring more thoughtful voices and varied perspectives to the mainstream broadcast media, primarily radio, on a range of urgent national and global issues. Supported by major foundations, MMP began as an eighteen-month project but continued to grow and thrive for nineteen years before closing its doors in the spring of 2014. From 2009-2014 MMP was directed by Jimmy Durchslag. In 2001, I launched and hosted what became an internationally syndicated weekly radio program, "A World of Possibilities," which broadcast in-depth conversations with social innovators around the world and was heard on 200 stations. In 2009 "A World of Possibilities" spun off from MMP to become its own nonprofit organization.
  • Cocoa Rustica
    Founder
    Cocoa Rustica Mar 2009 - Dec 2013
    San Francisco Bay Area
In late 2009, I began a "cocoa quest" in search of the origins and history of the cacao bean from which chocolate is made. My inquiry took me to Southern Mexico, the cocoa coast of Brazil in Bahia, and the headwaters of the Amazon in Peru. There I found cacao growing in great diversity in the wild and realized its immense potentia as a "totem species" that could help preserve and revive tropical rainforests. I returned home and began to develop Cocoa Rustica, a 100% unrefined chocolate (nothing removed but the cocoa hulls) for drinking and cooking. I held a successful series of "cocoa soirees" but ultimately realized that the routine tasks of manufacturing, packaging and merchandising a food product was not what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. At the end of 2013 I closed down the business. But as I was in the act of closing my bank accounts the banker with whom I was working suggested that I contact a chocolatier in the vicinity. Stay tuned. Cocoa Rustica may yet find a home, not with me but with someone better suited to pursue it as a vocation.
  • A World Of Possibilities Radio
    Host And Executive Producer
A World Of Possibilities Radio Aug 2001 - Dec 2011
    Arcata, California
As Executive Producer of "A World of Possibilities," an hour-long weekly syndicated radio program, I raised all the money to support the program for a decade from more than fifteen foundations, including many of the nation's largest. I directed a production team of six to record, compose, edit, produce and market the program to public radio stations nationwide. As host, I conducted all interviews (averaging five per program) and in consultation with my production team selected themes and guests. Select programs from "A World of Possibilities" are still available on the Public Radio Exchange (www.prx.org) by typing the name of the program into the search bar. Some have also been adapted to become videos and are available on the Hearts Broken Open website (www.heartsbrokenopen.com) under Stories. "A World of Possibilities" was initially part of the Mainstream Media Project but spun off into a separate nonprofit organization in 2009. In its decade-long run, the program won six international awards, including one from the United Nations.
  • Compton Foundation
    Consultant, Peace And World Order
