As the leader of our Consultancy business, I was responsible for growing our portfolio of work and client base around the Energy Transition, securing and delivering flagship projects in the net zero space. We also worked on world-leading asset management strategies for distribution and transmission companies around the globe, helping them embrace new technologies and ensure their networks are fit for a decarbonised future.

I am responsible for leading the Network Innovation area of EA Technology's business. This includes: techno-economic modelling, innovation strategy development, cost benefit analyses of deploying innovative tools/approaches, running smart grid demonstrator projects and integrating innovative approaches into business as usual.

As Head of Advanced Network Solutions, I lead a team of highly skilled engineers and project managers looking at a range of electrical engineering projects. This involves working for a wide client base, including Distribution Network Operators, regulatory and governmental bodies, renewable energy developers and major energy users.Recently, I have personally been involved in leading projects for EA Technology within the Smart Grid Forum. These include the development of the world’s first techno-economic model to evaluate the impact that low carbon technologies will have on electricity distribution networks, and determine the most cost-effective solutions to deploy on networks to solve these problems. I have also been involved in several Low Carbon Network Fund projects (at bid stage and in delivery) including the Customer Led Network Revolution, New Thames Valley Vision and I2EV (Innovation Squared: Electric Vehicles).

While at United Utilities, I gained a large amount of experience of network planning within a Distribution Network Operator. I was responsible for carrying out system studies on the 33kV and 132kV networks using highly specialised software. Primarily, the studies carried out were to determine the need for network reinforcement and to provide points-of-connection for both demand and generation customers, including a significant number of windfarms. Aside from carrying out system studies, I was also responsible for analysing network losses and annually calculating Loss Adjustment Factors to be applied to tariffs. This led to my preparing a paper and successfully pursuing a change to the Balancing and Settlements Code regarding the way in which technical losses are apportioned to generators. Following this, I assisted in the formulation of policy both within United Utilities, and also on a national level through participation in an Industry Expert Group facilitated by Elexon, regarding the way in which losses (both technical and non-technical) should be calculated and apportioned to customers in a network. Together with my work in regulatory reporting, this led me to become well-versed in the relationship between Distribution Network Operators, Transmission Network Operators, and the Regulator.
