In 2011, our family started Getty Owl Foundation, dedicated to fighting Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), the #1 genetic killer of young children.Getty Owl Foundation helps affected families and provides funding to accelerate research to cure SMA.Helping families. Fighting SMA.SMA is a genetic neuromuscular disorder causing severe muscle weakness and death, mostly affecting children under age 2. It affects the ability to move, cough, swallow, and breathe. The mind is unaffected.There is hope, as SMA is the #1 disorder closest to cure of over 600 neurological disorders.Getty Owl Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public charity, named in honor of our daughter, Getty, our little owl. In July 2010, we were told she would not see her second birthday. She has SMA Type 1, but she is a thriving happy little lady, defying the odds every day.Hoot hoot!
