I am a specialist in the broad field of Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management (FCERM) at Coastal Partners; a customer focused partnership between 5 Local Authorities on the south coast of the UK who have joined together in recognition of the fact that coastal process and marine issues are not exclusive to political boundaries. I have helped to shape and grow this organisation, as part of the leadership team, in response to coastal change. I am responsible for the leadership and management of the Policy, Environment and Research Team at Coastal Partners, a team of 22 people (out of 65).I am a Chartered Member of The Chartered Institute of Water & Environmental Management (CIWEM) and I have a robust understanding of the disciplines that underpin sustainable coastal management. I place high value on the importance of its protection, conservation and natural evolution from both a social and natural perspective. I have over 18 years’ experience in this multidisciplinary sector and have worked across, and with, a broad range of organisations both within the UK and mainland Europe. I am the Chair of the CIWEM Expert Panel for FCERM, a respected role in the sector, I am a key and active member of the national Local Government Association Coastal Special Interest Group (LGA Coastal SIG) lobbying through this network to effect and influence change in the sector through central government.I am also a core member of the National Coastal Group Network and I am leading two ‘Call to Arms’ workstreams on ‘Coastal Landfill’ and ‘Funding and Place’ demonstrating my skills in advocacy and changing behaviour through evidence. Through these groups and forums, I have strived to raise the profile of coastal projects and their ability to deliver much wider benefits than FCERM alone; alongside some of the issues with the current funding process from a Local Authority perspective.Specialities: FCERM, Coastal Policy & Strategy, Leadership & Management, Project Management, Options Appraisal & Outline Design, Partnership Funding, Coastal Planning, Development & Regeneration, Stakeholder & Community Engagement, Broader Outcomes & Contributions, Delivering Differently, Place Shaping, Making and Keeping, Coastal Monitoring & Research.

Coastal Policy, Strategy & Environment Team LeaderEastern Solent Coastal Partnership Jan 2015 - Jan 2017Havant, Portsmouth, Fareham, GosportI have a detailed understanding of the shoreline management planning (SMP) process, having been on the project team who delivered two of these plans on the south coast. I also have a solid understanding of the national Defra policy and National FCERM Strategy backdrop, having been part of the Environment Agency working groups that helped to shape their development from 2017-2020. An understanding of the legislation at the coast is an important element of my day-to-day work when delivering significant infrastructure projects at the shoreline, alongside planning for coastal change and an appreciation of the National Planning Policy Framework. I have helped the Local Authorities I work for write and deliver Local Plan Policy at the coast and develop Coastal Change Management Areas to manage coastal change effectively. At the operational level I have then gone on to deliver the SMP policies on the ground through the development of localised strategies and then flood defence and erosion protection schemes, alongside the implementation of long-term adaptation plans and habitat creation and improvement projects. This required the development of project scopes, procuring professional support, optioneering, study design and delivery and the supervision of all of the necessary licensing and consenting. One of my responsibilities is to oversee the Coastal Partners future work programme and to identify broader outcome and place shaping opportunities. I am a specialist in strategic thinking and aligning multiple objectives to deliver wider benefits through partnership working. As a result, I have secured multi-millions of partnership funding which has helped to deliver significant outcomes for FCERM and the communities that it benefits. -

Project Officer - Coastal Communities 2150The Environment Agency Mar 2012 - Aug 2012At the Environment Agency I worked on an INTERREG funded project called 'Coastal Communities 2150'. The project engaged with priority communities at risk from long term coastal change both in the UK and across Europe. The main objective of the project was to develop new ways of engaging with communities and new ways of communicating the risks of coastal climate change.I was responsible for attending and presenting at European partner workshops and for the running of community engagement groups where I presented complex information about coastal management and sea level rise in a simple and understandable way. I also ran an internal activity group consisting of technical specialists who helped to inform the CC2150 project -
Coastal Process ScientistChannel Coastal Observatory Oct 2006 - Mar 2012Southampton, United KingdomMy main role at CCO involved the responsibility for the management of the survey schedule for a large section of the southeast UK coastline (East Solent). This included the planning and implementation of topographic beach surveys and coastal research projects; data/information processing and analysis and finally the interpretation and dissemination of the results. I personally undertook over 600 topographic surveys so have an excellent knowledge of surveying procedures. From 2008-2011 I sat on the project team and client steering group for the North Solent Shoreline Management Plan. My specific responsibilities included, but were not limited to: stakeholder engagement coordination, erosion risk mapping, predicting future shoreline change scenarios, producing policy statements and general project administration work. Close links with local planning authorities and engineers was essential to the successful completion of this project.I utilised a host of analytical software including the ArcMap and MapInfo GIS suite, Matlab, Halcrows ‘SANDS’ database, CAD, Microsoft Office, and other more specialist programs and models.
