Mr Mark Thompson is a Director in GeoTerraImage Pty Ltd, Pretoria South Africa. He is responsible for technical and business development of environmental remote sensing applications to a wide range of private and public end-user sectors. Mr Thompson holds an MSc in Applied Remote Sensing from Cranfield Institute of Technology, UK (1986), and has over 29 years of professional, post-graduate Earth Observation (EO) experience, of which 27 years have been spent in southern Africa. He has specialist knowledge, expertise and practical experience in the use of remote sensing EO tools and datasets for natural resource, vegetation and land-cover mapping and inventory in a wide range of southern African environments. He has expert knowledge of the ERDAS Imagine © suite of software tools for digital image processing. He has personally played key roles in the planning and implementation of national and regional land-cover mapping programmes and data products in South Africa and Botswana, and has undertaken project specific work across all of SADC and many parts of central and northern Africa. This also includes establishing national land-cover mapping data standards for both South Africa and Botswana. Mr Thompsons profile as a regional remote sensing expert has also been recognised internationally through various consultancy appointments and collaboration with organisations such as the European Union (EU), United Nations FAO (Italy), DFID-CARDNO (UK), Conservation International (USA), EROS Data Centre (USA) and the EU's Joint Research Council (JRC, Italy), and GAF gmb (Germany). Mr Thompson is registered as a Professional GeoSpatial (GISc) Practioner with the South African Council for Professional and Technical Surveyors (PGP 0050, 2006), and is has authored / co-author of  20 publications in the scientific literature (peer reviewed scientific and general papers, published book chapters and inserts).
