Responsible for the delivery of digital products, process improvement, data and systems to support NY Electric’s digital transformation ambition

Responsible for the delivery of grid modernization efforts upstate New York, including program management, project engineering, OT support, and change management. Grid Modernization programs include advanced grid technologies (FLISR, VVO, etc.), operational telecom (modernization and buildout of our private telecom networks), and digital substations (IEC 61850 and online monitoring).

To support National Grid’s aspiration as a world leader in the electricity transmission business, the company in endeavoring in a wide-scale digital substation transformation to reduce costs, increase reliability, reduce maintenance, and expedite construction. The digital delivery group will be creating the foundation for the future electrical substation. The group is responsible to ensure an efficient and fast-paced large-scale adoption of digital substation equipment, with a goal of over 150 substation projects in the next 10 years throughout New England and New York service territories. In this position I am accountable for the strategy and execution of the company’s digital substation transformation vision. This vision includes repeatable, reliable, and efficient substation design, construction, and operation for a scalable deployment of digital substation technology. The digital delivery group has program manager focused on IEC 61850 (digital control and protection systems) and enhanced asset monitoring, as well as communications, training, and IT/cybersecurity support individuals

In this position at National Grid, I led a new team dedicated to integrating the IEC 61850 standard into the substation environment. This standard provides the framework for secure and reliable network communication within a utility system.The group's responsibilities include the creation of new internal standards, development of test/training laboratories, and design/construction of pilot projects.

At National Grid, I act as the project engineer, leading internal and external design teams on distribution and transmission station projects from 4.16 kV up to 345 kV. It is my responsibility to ensure the quality and coordination of design documents from conceptual through final construction. I am lucky to work with, learn from, and coordinate teams of experienced planners, protection and control engineers, construction/operations personal, as well as many others at National Grid.Other tasks have included:● Design the upgrades to National Grid stations for incorporation of distributed generation and other customer driven projects.● Developed specifications for the design and construction (often EPC) of stations by external entities for the eventual turnover to National Grid.● Worked as part of the team to develop a competitive proposal for new transmission assets as part of the FERC order 1000.● Actively support the development of junior staff and revised technical standards.

Managed a group of seven electrical engineers and drafters, with experience ranging from 40 plus years to a summer co-op. Provided electrical engineering and technical review in support of energy, advanced manufacturing, water, and environmental clients. Project manager, lead engineer, and client manager in support of substation design services for an upstate NY investor owned utility. Efforts included managing the in-house design team, proposal development, and managing project costs.Engineering and project manager for design and construction support for electrical projects at a biological pharmaceutical campus. Projects included process improvements within GMP areas, mechanical improvement support, process control upgrades, fire alarm upgrades, and other general electrical engineering support.

As an electrical engineer at O'Brien & Gere, I engaged on a wide array of projects for Energy, Industrial, Environmental Remediation, and Municipal clients. Engineering support has included low and medium voltage electrical systems, renewable/energy storage, and various control systems. Additionally, I have provided project and client management for various substation, DG, and energy efficiency projects.SubstationDesigned stations for Utility (Public and Municipal), Industrial, and Higher Education clients. Design tasks have included transformer, metal-clad switchgear, and capacitor bank selection specification as well as ground grid, lightning protection, AC/DC loading, battery sizing, and fault current calculations. Experienced with relay protection and control within the substation.Distributed GenerationI have provided interconnect and utility coordination services for various DG and energy storage projects throughout the northeast. I have also executed DTT schemes for customers and the utility, as well as provided protective relay programming for POC relay.System AnalysisI have executed arc flash risk assessment utilizing current NFPA 70E, IEEE 1584, and OSHA standards. I have also developed coordination studies, load flow analsyis, and harmonic analysis in accordance with IEEE 519.Industrial/Advanced ManufacturingI have experience with power distribution for industrial, pharmaceutical, and advanced manufactuering clients. Including motor control for systems such as critical pharmaceutical HVAC, larger hammer mills, and precise conveyors. Design task have included sizing UPS and generator systems, designing interior and exterior lighting, implementing complex control systems, and fire alarm and telecom services.Water/WastewaterDesigned electrical and instrumentation systems for anaerobic, MBR, and SBR treatment systems as well as conveyance systems.I have also created electrical hazard classification memos and design for Class I and II areas.
