Mark Unthank is an autodidact artist and designer based in Amsterdam. His photography purposefully rejects the ideals of the designer as he works introspectively, exploring his personalities, experiences, and tastes. Although ostensibly expressionistic, his work is focused primarily on capturing the textures and motion in the spontaneity of live performance. Because of his subject matter, Mark has found an intriguing cross-section of appeal for his art. His work has been published by traditional music publications (Revolver, Kerrang) as well as gaining interest in the fine art world. His first book, “I Let It In And It Took Everything: photographs” contains 100 images captured on film and developed on the road during a 2-week tour with the British band Loathe, and will be published December 2020. — GUP

I led the UX for the three areas of Amazon’s B2B product focused on Customer Acquisition. My work concentrates on building relationships with stakeholders and advocating for UX and the UX process. I do that by building trust through elevating projects with UX insight, and delivering on what I promise. My day-to-day includes strategising on approach and roadmaps for both product and organisation, mentoring partners in product and design by sharing knowledge, offering critique, and leading by example, as well as the execution of typical UX deliverables to support those strategies and the team’s needs.

I find the proverbial diamonds of user insights in the rough, and turn those into product improvements that solve customer problems in scalable, measurable, and rational ways, leading the team along that journey with me.

Working on Tooling and Figma Best Practices to improve the experience of Booking.com's designers, and those who interact with Design. I conceived and developed multiple internal tools which extend the functionality of Figma to better meet the needs of the scale of our design team, on topics like discoverability of design work and attribution of ownership. I also developed a file management practice for how our designers should organise their work within Figma, as well as delivering Figma workshops and training to upskill the design and product teams.

We identified a need for Booking.com's R&D/New Product Ventures teams to have a design system that was more flexible than the accommodations product. It needed to cover a broader set of cases that extended beyond conversion optimisation and needed to be developed faster than the speed that the whole company could move. Working closely with Principals, I developed a design system of foundations, a component library, and assisted in the structured rollout for the system across Booking.com's R&D product teams.

I joined the Events team just as they validated their MVP. After analysing the customer feedback we were receiving, I guided the team through its preparations to scale the product. I began my work on creating new visual design foundations to amplify the brand's identity in the Events space and produced designs to solve the key problems in the areas of product discovery and horizontal (geographic) scaling.

Guided research and product strategy while leading the team through the MVP stage of design for the company's aspiration for the world's most-supplied restaurant reservations platform. The project explored multiple concepts for Food product offerings and eventually decided on restaurant reservations for travellers. I was responsible for the MVP which eventually scaled to 45 languages, and ~30% coverage of the world's reservable restaurant supply.

Led research and design on an interdisciplinary team from the inception of the product until launch. This was a major strategic push for Booking.com outside of non-accommodation offering and its first time with a Cruises product. My team built out an entire end-to-end Cruises acquisition and booking funnel and successfully demonstrated our hypothesis.

Sole designer on a small, consistently high-performing, cross-functional team. Devised, conducted and analysed over 1200 A/B and multivariant conversion and experience optimisation experiments resulting in +$00MM/year impact on revenue.

Most importantly, an understanding of how a business functions, from not only running my own, but working closely with several clients’ businesses on everything from print design to organisational development.
