Profile bio

About Mark Van Heukelum

Listed skills include Ecology, Social Media, Water Quality, Conservation Issues, and 13 others.

Bio Inspired Innovator

The natural world is a general source of inspiration in my work. Simply because many solutions in nature are surprisingly applicable to our daily challenges. This leads to innovative projects and inspiring collaborations. Some based on biomimicry, some just inspired by nature. Wildspotter.nl On this online platforms, camera trap videos of wildlife crossing research are shared with the general public. The public is asked to, while watching the videos, share which species they think are visible. This way the data is analyzed based on ‘crowd sourcing’. And at the same time, support for the subject is created by this form of citizen participation. (2016)Visspotter.nlA similar platform, sharing underwater footage of fish ladder research. (2017)The 11 principles11 principles are derived from natural communities, that form a base for strong teams. Wait.. you mean animals? Yes! See what 3.8 billion years of evolution has led to in terms of collaboration. A case of Social Bio Inspired Innovation! (2016)Bio Inspired Innovation ZoneThe municipality of Westvoorne, in a coalition with the Port of Rotterdam and the University of Vlissingen, are planning an innovation zone between lake Oostvoorne and the port of Rotterdam. We came up with a vision, based on several natural principles; such as ‘resistance leads to growth’, ‘disturbance leads to diversity’ and diversity leads to stability’. (2016)Savannah-based interior designWe designed the interior of a starters facility on the Chemelot Campus, based on different zones of an African savannah. (2014) Low land fish laddersWe designed 3 types of prefab fish ladders, specially designed for low land conditions; low water discharge, limited building space and strict water level management. (2014)The oxatur A biofilter based on photocatalytic coating, aeration and nutrient uptake by plants. (2013) CARSA carpooltool focussing on colleagues networking (2012)

I've worked on an idea to combine conservation with social media. By building an application based on 'infotainment' I wanted to make people wonder, aware and contribute to conservation in a modern and easy way. The content is based on camera trap research, from which we reuse the footage. After approval of the business case, building the first demo's and finding funds and developers we were entering the final stage: the realisation of the App. Unfortunately, due to lack of funding the proces came to a hold. Still, it has een a learningful experience en maybe when the time is right we'll have another go!
